About the Film
"Nickel Boys" is a 2024 drama film directed by RaMell Ross. Set in 1960s Florida during the Jim Crow era, the film follows two young African-American boys, Elwood and Turner, as they navigate the harrowing realities of Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school. Elwood, an idealist inspired by the civil rights movement, clashes with Turner, a pragmatic survivor. Their friendship forms the emotional core of the story. The film interweaves their experiences with scenes from Elwood's future, highlighting the lasting impact of their time at Nickel.

The novel itself is inspired by the true story of the Dozier School for Boys, a notorious reform school in Florida that operated for over a century and was known for its horrific abuse of students. "Nickel Boys" is a poignant exploration of race, resilience, and the enduring struggle for justice.
